An offensive operation of the Red Army to defeat the troops of the Armed Forces of the South of Russia (AFSR) advancing on Moscow under the command of Anton Denikin.
The Red Army forces in the Southern Front under the command of Aleksander Egorov defeated the troops of AFSR to the south of Oryol (Oryol-Kromy operation October 11 – November 18). At the same time, the Reds carried out the Voronezh-Kastornoye operation (October 13 – November 16) attacking the flank of the AFSR strike group. The main blow was delivered by Semyon Budyonny’s 1st Cavalry Corps, which captured Voronezh on October 24 after fierce battles.
As a result of the counter-offensive, the Whites’ advance to Moscow was stopped. The Red Army inflicted tangible damage on AFSR, about 8 thousand soldiers and officers were captured, as well as guns and armored trains. The Reds threw the enemy back 165 km and seized the strategic initiative.
